The DVD player was developed under direction of over ten different technology companies. No single person owns the DVD, and the DVD term is not trademarked or copyrighted. In 1997 the first DVD player was offered for sale from Toshiba for the price of almost $1,000. The ECMA is responsible for upholding the international DVD standards.

No one invented the DVD player since no person invented DVD's. When first made there were two competing formats supported by different companies. Instead of going through a format war they got together and made one format. So then all the companies made the DVD player for that format.

The dvd player wasn't invented by a single person. However it was invented in 1994, Phillips was one of the first to come out with the players along with disks. However a number of companies also did in the same time frame. So left to say I would have to say Phillips did based on the information.
