I would first try a lens cleaner. Its a disc that has a small line of fine bristles on it so when it spins it wipes off the lens. if that doesn't work I'd try to manually reset the player. Most electronic devices have a small pin tip size button on the back that says reset.

The best way to troubleshoot a portable dvd player that has a error message no valid disc is to first clean the disc. Make sure it does not have finger prints or smudges on it. If that does not work you need to check if you are useing a dvd and not a cd.

Try inserting another DVD, seeing as some less expensive DVD players are less compatible with certain types of DVD. Make sure the DVD player is of brand name and that should fix your problems.

You should try to play other DVDs, preferably brand new ones that aren't scratched. If your portable dvd player cannot play ANY DVDs, it could mean the laser in the dvd player is damaged or unclean and requires repair. Secondly, if you are using an incorrect CD or a pirated movie disc, the dvd player might refuse to play.

The problem may be that your DVD player is not equipped to read other formats like MP3 etc. If however your DVD player is not able to read a DVD then it may be a hardware problem. That requires you to open up the outer panel and debug the circuit inside and fix it up.
