The first English colony in America was the colony of Jamestown in present day Virginia. It was founded in 1608 and struggled to survive during its early years due to a consuming interest by the colonists to search for gold rather than grow food. It eventually thrived on the growth of tobacco, and spurred English colonization of America.

The first successful English colony was the Jamestown Settlement Colony founded May 14, 1607. It was founded by Christopher Newport. It was named for the English King, James I. Life in the colony was terrible at first, with many people starving. By 1624 only 3,400 of the original 6,000 survived.
