What were the diverse purposes of England's American colonies and how were those purposes altered in the early years of settlement?

I need help with England's American colonies and how they altered years of settlement.

Many colonists came in search of religious freedom and hoped to set up ideal states, others hopes to make profit. Changes came with the harsh realities of climate and food, or lack thereof. More real, governed colonies emerged.

Massachusetts began as Puritan religious ideal in practice; it became a democratic republic. Georgia began as a debtor's colony. Virginia was begun to find gold; it became an agricultural exporter of tobacco.
