Ulcers in the stomach, an obstruction in the digestive system, certain medicines, gastritis, tumors and blood clotting disorders. If this is an isolated incident and the dog is alert then there may be nothing seriously wrong. Mulitiple incidents, signs of distress as well as lack of appetite indicate that a veterinarian visit would be a good idea.

The reason your dog could be throwing up lots of blood is because of something he might have eaten that could have been sharp that has caused internal bleeding in his stomach and thus has caused him to throw up blood. Also it could be a stomach ulcer that has grown and is now causing blood to come up.

The dog could be suffering from internal bleeding from several different things. If the dog is given an excess of raw hides internal bleeding could occur. This is because dogs cannot complete digest them. The dog could also have swallowed a foreign object that could not be passed. In either case the dog should be taken to a vet.

Your dog could have swallowed something sharp or poisonous. If it was something sharp it could have done some damage to the stomach. If it was something poisonous, there could be internal bleeding of some sort. Also, a tumor might be present inside the stomach which is causing internal bleeding.
