Why would a cat cough up a fine mist of blood when trying to cough up a hairball?

My youngest cat was trying to cough up a hairball this morning (she didn't succeed), and I noticed a some VERY fine blood droplets where she was coughing. She's not throwing up blood, and it's a VERY little amount of blood, and she seems fine (eating, drinking, etc. ).

No, there should not be blood from trying to cough up a hairball. I would recommend taking the cat to the vet immediately. It could be something as simple as an infection or something a lot more serious. I would at the very least call a vet for advise.

If the blood coughed up is only a few droplets and a very fine mist I wouldn't worry. The hairball is probably caught in the cats esophagus and working to get it up is irritating her throat. The strain of coughing may cause a few blood vessels to break but I wouldn't worry about it.

I would keep a close eye on your kitty and if any changes occur (ie: more blood or change of appetite), take her to the vet for a check up immediately.

Yes, this is pretty normal. It shouldn't happen often, but if she seems fine, it should be okay. The blood is just caused from the irritation from the hariball in her stomach.
