One big social issue that caused trouble was relations with the Indians or Native Americans. They saw them as a threat to land they wanted after time and also saw them as savages, dangerous, and beneath their civilized ways. This was a problem in almost any colony throughout America's history however.

The New York colony was founded in 1665 by the Duke of York. The Duke of York had little control over the land that he was granted. Instead, he allowed governers, councils, and other officers to control the land for him. New York set up a law, called Duke's law, that allowed people from different religions to enter the province.
