Alkaline phosphatase is actually a group of enzymes (special proteins) that are found mainly in the liver or the bones, but also in other organs. High levels mean that one of these organs may be malfunctioning. Testing for the type of alkaline phosphatase will indicate which organ is affected.

Increased level of alkaline phosphatase in blood may be the indicators of liver or bone disease such as cancer of bone. alkaline phosphatase may increase due to smoking, or intake of fatty diet, so alkaline phosphase test without other tests are unreliable. Antacid intake nay also affect phosphatase level in blood.

Alkaline phosphatase produced by the bone, liver, and placenta is an enzyme that is checked to identify liver problems. If it is abnormally high, it is a result of obstruction and malignancies. With bile duct obstruction jaundice (skin turns yellow)develops due to increase bilirubin in the blood. If with malignancy, It is better to do biopsy.

Alkaline Phosphatase is made mostly in the liver and bone. If it is in high level more test should be done to determine whether you have liver or bone disease.
