Wood rots when another organism, either a fungus or a bacteria, begins to digest the wood. Fungi are the primary cause of rotting, as they grow, they penetrate the wood and secrete enzymes that digest the wood and break it down into less complex molecules. This process causes the wood to loose it's strength and disintegrate.

Wood dries as it ages. Along with the drying process, the cellulose that holds the wood particles together also dries out allowing the cells of the wood to separate and rot.
