Why won't my cat care for her kittens?

It is possible that there is something wrong with the kittens, for example, they are sick. In the wild, your cat would probably just leave the kittens. I would suggest taking them to the vet to get checked for feline leukemia and things like that.

There can be a number of reasons. Maybe the cat senses that the kittens are not healthy so nature says to let them go. Or the cat just doesn't have the instinct to take care of them. Or she doesn't smell herself on the kittens anymore cause someone held them.

It may be that the mother cat is disinterested because she is too young. Also, she may not be producing enough milk. She also may not be getting proper nutrition. If she is not getting the proper diet and calories, she may be physically unable to care for them.

Sometimes bonding can be an issue for young mothers. Lack of bonding is a serious problem, and could lead to the kitten's death, so you should definitely contact your vet about the issue.
