The first thing you should check is the condition of the threads on the cap itself, inspect the threads of the filler neck. If both are good replace the cap
Gas caps are design to be tightened done but usually have a mechanism to prevent full tightening. It allow for the pressure to vent if needed. If the lid sealed the pressure could damage the system.
