Can a gas cap keep a car from starting?

Yesterday my car stopped while on the freeway. It just shut off. Today I tried starting it while my husband twisted the gas cap off to hear the fuel pump kick on. As the cap came off the car started. Any relation? What could the problem be otherwise?

Unlikely. I also suspect a faulty fuel pump. I would get it checked out immediately or you can add a tow bill to the cost of repair!

You could have a faulty gas cap the holds too much pressure. Newer cars require a certain pressure in the fuel system and your cap may not be working correctly.
