Thickening skin is often caused by age and repeated use. If your hands are constantly exposed to the elements then thick skin is your body's way of protecting itself.

If you work with your hands a lot, like heavy labor, your skin on your hands will naturally thicken as a protection. If this is not the case you should see a dermatologist for an appropriate diagnosis.

Skin is naturally thicker on the hands and soles of the feet. Your skin may be thicker because it's not sloughed away quickly as dead cells come to the surface.

If you have thickening skin on your hands, it's most likely the result of callus formation. Calluses are formed when you perform some kind of manual labor that causes an object to frequently rub against your skin. Your skin tissue "builds up" and hardens in an effort to protect itself against blistering.
