Why is my ferret losing tail fur?

Hair loss on a ferret's tail is referred to as rat tail. This is a natural part of the shedding cycle. The fur will grow back when the cycle ends.

It seems ferrets just Do. If the rest of his coat looks good, he's eating and drinking well, you shouldn't have a problem. This IS a well documented condition with ferrets. To make sure it isn't indicative of a problem in the making, I would google, buy books, or consult your vet. Ferrets can be prone to skin issues.

It is probably molting combined with a lack of fatty acids. Complemental food with salmon oil capsules (1 or 2 per week), grilled meat without salt (chicken or beef), nutricalories (Nutriplus energel or gel), boiled eggs (chicken one to week two shots), and sardines in olive oil, low in salt (1 minnow a week in two divided doses)

A common cause of fur loss is stress, she may be pulling it out herself or is it falling out? look at her environment, is she with others? she may need to be o her own. It may also be fleas, or mange.

A possibility for loss of fur on ferret's tail could be due to seasonal shedding. Depending on the speed and amount of loss, it could be an adrenal gland condition.

This happens on a seasonal basis, and is completely normal; it will grow back. However, if you notice hairloss on the ferret's body, or if the tail fur does not grow back, then there is a problem and you should take your pet to a qualified vet for an exam.

This happens seasonally and is nothing to worry about. When your ferret grows a new coat, the fur should come back. If it does not, or you notice hair loss elsewhere, then take him/her to the vet for a checkup as it might be an adrenal issue that requires attention.

The most common reason for ferrets to lose fur is because they are aging. If your ferret is older, there really isn't much you can do about the hair loss. If your ferret is young, though, you should see a vet to make sure he/she is okay.
