Normally it happens when you have a lot of services running at startup. This services are installed with programs that needs them to make some automatic task, but maybe you don't want it all of the time. In this case, got to Start > run and write "msconfig", then go to "Startup" tab and check only what you really need.

You may have a lot of programs starting at once. Click start and then run. Then type "msconfig. " This will allow you to edit programs that start up.

The problem with XP slow startup comes from the incresed memory and processor usage. When your computer starts it loads a lot of programs and processes into the RAM memory making it unusable for a couple of seconds. This can be reduced by unintalling most of the programs you know.

this could be caused by any number of reasons. It usually means that you're trying to start to many programs at boot-up, so try to reduce them. If that doesn't work try a virus scan or upgrading your computer hardware.
