There is some disagreement among historians, but generally the process began around 1815 with the the end of Napoleonic rule, and ended sometime around 1871 with the Franco-Prussian War.

Scholars genrally agree the modern unification of Italy began in 1815 with the "Congress in Vienna." This was after the defeat of France's Napoleon. Many revolutions followed, however.
