A foal can be weaned as early as 2 months but it's not recommended. Most people wean at 4 to 6 months, it makes for a more emotionally secure horse.

Some foals are weaned as early as three months but a more ideal age for weaning is between 4-6 months. Foals should only be weaned very early with Veterinary supervision as it can cause many growth, health and emotional problems.

This time in the foal's life is very traumatic and shouldn't be done too young. The best age to wean a foal is around 5 months or older to ensure that your foal is eating and drinking on his own. Foal's "try" Mom's feed at a few weeks of age but don't eat it full time until a bit later.
