What should I do if I think I ran over a squirrel?

If it is not dangerous to stop, do so and remove the squirrel from the road so as to avoid other cars to brake or drive around the dead squirrel. You can either put it on the side of the road or put it in a bag and trash it in an appropriate place.

First of all, thanks for realizing that something should be done. Take the squirrel to a vet and follow the vet's instructions.

Go back to the site and see if you did hit it, and if so, call the city's maintenance department so that they can clean up the road kill.

First, know that squirrels are not on the protected species list. They are however cute and fun to watch. They gather acorns and bury them which may someday become a new tree. That's their job, yours is to suck it up and move on, after a quiet prayer.
