The general rule is one cup per serving at two servings per day of regular puppy food such as IAMS or PEDIGREE. Somewhere around one year of age, the servings generally decrease to one per day depending on the size of you particular puppy. They will eat when food is out so be careful of having a fat puppy.

Iams or Eukanueba are both good brands available at local retailers. 5 months old is almost old enough to switch to adult food. usually about age 6 months. make sure when you switch from puppy food to adult, you ease them into it, a little new food, alot old.... and then on until its all new food.

Look along those lines, protein levels, carbohydrates. Eggs and dogs are always good, but may need to be prepared differently. Their coats and skin have different needs, as well as their eyes and noses. Check things like that.

In general, dogs under one year should eat puppy food or food for all life stages. The key is to feed a high quality food, which will maintain your dog's health. I like Caniadae All Life Stages. It does NOT contain any corn, wheat, or other fillers. Caniadae also includes vitamins, minerals, and conditioners for your Sheltie's coat.

I prefer dry dog food and just about any of the manufacturers have something specifically for young dog. Dry dog food works better for teething and the desire to chew on things.

A five-month old Sheltie should be receiving about 1/4 cup of Puppy Chow twice a day. Canned dog foods should be used sparingly but may be of great help with 'picky' eaters.
