The typical areas that are cut on this breed are the feathers which are on the legs. Just trim to even. Trim any hairs protruding off the top of the feet and around the edges. The rear end can be cut close if preferred. Just shape it to the contour of the body. Make sure all knots and mats are brushed out or cut beforehand.

First, brush your sheltie's hair until silky smooth. Then simply comb out a section and cut it to the desired length. Take the time to step back and look at the overall cut as you go so that the length of the cut is the same on both side. Having someone distract your dog while you cut may be helpful.

Basic comb and shear is the best technique. But to make this easier be sure to brush your shelties hair regularly with a pin brush. Also bathing your sheltie when necessary will be a big help. The softer and healthier the hair, the easier it is to trim.

If your dog is nervous about being groomed, it would be best to take him to a professional groomer. If not, make sure that you don't shave the sheltie.
