Active immunity is when you induce a body to produce its own antibodies against a particular antigen. It is a long-lasting effect. For example, this takes place in immunizations. Passive immunity is when you provide a body with the antibodies themselves. Its effects are short-lived. An example is antibodies in breast milk.

Active immunity happens when a persons body produces the necessary antibodies after a 'primary immune response' takes place. Passive immunity means that instead of a response by the persons own system, antibodies must be injected to replicate the primary immune response.

Active immunity comes the person's body itself, or also gotten from a vaccination, lasting a lifetime. Passive immunity is temporary and comes from another person, like mother to newborn.

In active immunity direct contact with foreign organisms or antibodies create antigen to help ward off future infections or reactions. In passive immunity, while there may be no direct antibodies, they are passed down (such as genetic makeup).
