What makes a dog cough a lot in the morning?

Just in the morning could be nothing but I would have it checked out. Kennel cough would cause coughing all day long. Heart disease can cause chronic coughing too.

It's kind of like a human waking up. You may feel bad or have a stuffy nose but once you're fully awake your perfectly fine. If it's cold it can also onset a cough. Your dog is most likely fine.

If the dog has something in its throat it could caugh to try to clear it but it is a regular thing than a vet should be seen to ensure that it is nothing major.

It could be allergies or the dog could have something they call kennel cough. I would check with your local vet to make sure.

That depends on a lot of different things. Is it the only time the dog coughs? Is it a recent onset? Has this happened before and stopped for a while then started again? If it's only in the mornings then it is probably allergies or sinus issues. Dogs do tend to get them as much as humans do.

You dog will cough for the same reasons that a person coughs. He may just need to clear his lungs in the morning. If the cough changes in sound or is accompanied by wheezing consult your veterinarian.
