What is the history of Hamamatsu, Japan?

Is it true it started as a railway station?

The name Hamamatsu goes back at least 1300 years. The town was officially established in 1888 which was the same year the Tokaido Railway started running fully.

Yes and no, the Tōkaidō Main Line railway opened Hamamatsu Station in 1889. The same year, in a cadastal reform of Japan, Hamamatsu became a town. It was bassically a way of connecting all the major areas of Japan in one straight line.
