Why is it important to learn history?

History is so irrelevant, and I hate it. I get the importance of math and reading, but not history!

History is not irrelevant, which is why it is taught. We learn from mistakes, and history is full of mistakes. If we don't understand the past, we are bound to repeat it. This is how Obama got elected. Too many Americans are ignorant of our history.

It is important to understand history because it puts current events into context, as well as to avoid making the same mistakes again and again. For example, if you didn't know about World War II or the Vietnam war then you would not understand what shaped two different generations that are alive today. Today is the result of history!

Studying the events of the past give us an understanding of how the world came to be, not only in your world but around the world including all cultures of people as well as nature. Moreover, people can learn better ways to deal with conflict among nations and individuals.

History is a way of figuring out how our world and our society got the way they are today. Otherwise, we would keep making the same mistakes as our ancestors.

My high school history teacher sucked. He virtually ignored our class. I took history pass/fail in college, thus didn't study much there. Now, as an adult I am so ashamed of how LITTLE I know. I had to figure out myself who fought World Wars! study history. You won't regret.
