What is the British class system and does it work?

Historically, the class system dates to the UK's formation. Classes included lower levels like cottagers up to higher classes like Peers, Knights and Royals. One was born into a specific class. Changes in the 1980s have diminished the system somewhat, but it exists today, largely based on lineage and wealth.

Definition of class varies widely these days, But usually depends on factors like wealth and occupation. 'House of Lords' representing the upper class, the 'House of Commons' representing everyone else.
