Cognitivism education is part of learning theory of psychology. Cognitivism's perspective views man as an active learner. It broke away from behaviorism, which views man as a programmed learner. One of the first Cognitive theorists was Jean Piaget, who stated the development of cognition had six distinct phases.

This explanation of developmental stages that humans experience is one of the three predominant learning theories under which most educational learning systems fall. The other predominant theories are behaviorism and constructivism.

It's based on the idea that the individual doing the learning is applying their own personal thought processes and experiences to what they are learning. Consideration should be given to what can not be observed by a researcher. The interpretation of the learner will affect what is learned by the learner.
