What are the current special education accommodations?

The school district is required to meet the special education goals on the child's Individual Education Plan (IEP) under federal law. Parents have input into what goals go into the IEP as well as other specialists who work with the child. You also get to revisit IEPs each year and make modifications to it.

Many students receiving special education services will be given a personal assistant to help them throughout the day. If this is not necessary, assistive technology may be provided, or accommodations may be made for test taking, assignment completion, or physical education classes. Finally, individual services may be offered that include one-on-one pull out or in-classroom assistance.

You need to make sure you have a copy of and are aware of what accommodations are listed in your child's IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Every special education student's IEP is different. Once you know what should be done for her, you can talk with teachers and observe the classrooms to make sure she is getting what she needs.

Check with your state education department about state laws. The school should test your child for abilities & limitations. If a major plan is needed, called a 501 plan, you will get a copy. Minor accomodations may include allowing the student to use the elevator, getting best seat in classrooms, textbooks on CD, or a special keyboard.

Contact your school district's special education director and schedule an ARD review. Review your daughter's plan and compare it to what is actually being done for her. Feel free to discuss areas where your daughter needs more support and ask for specific time, tutoring, and material accommodations you fell will benefit her.

The "Special" kids are kept out of the normal kids classes to ensure that they don't disturb them. They've found having special needs children in the class causes the other kids not to learn. Special Education teachers are teaching your daughter and ensuring she gets the proper care and stimulation.
