First, you have your contact point. You will connect copper wire to this contact point and follow that with a special very thin wire designed to break if there is a lot of voltage passed through it (this is the fuse) and follow this with the other copper end.

Three wires come from the power meter; two are hot and one is neutral. Each 110 fuse circuit has one hot and one neutral. A 220 line (3-wire) has two hot and a neutral. Fuses range from 10 to 40 amp. Wire gauge must match the fuse.

Three-wire, 220 volt service comes in from the street and meter. This is divided at your fuse box into a pair of 110 lines. One hot and one neutral from a 110 circuit. The other hot and the neutral form the second 110 line. If a device needs 220 (example - stove), three wires (hot, hot, and neutral) come out.

Most importantly, a fuse box must be hooked to a good ground. Otherwise there are only 3 wires to be aware of. A common area for the bare copper wires, another common area that connects all of the white wires, and the bar that loads the breakers/fuses which is hot.
