Benzodiazepine is a CLASS of drugs, not a drug itself. Benzodiazpines are sedative-hypnotic medications prescribed for conditions including generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, short-term insomnia, muscle relaxation (Valium/Ativan in particular), and many other conditions. Benzodiazepines include medications such as Xanax (alprazolam), Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), Dalmane (flurazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), etc.

Benzodiazepines are a family of drugs commonly used as depressants as an anti-anxiety, muscle relaxant, anti-convulsant or anti-hypnotic. They are Schedule IV drugs per the Controlled Substances Act, and include brand names Valium, Ativan, Xanax and Librium, among others. Rohypnol, also known as the "date rape" drug, is also a benzo that is used to induce mild memory loss.
