Ponazuril is a veterinary medication that can be prescribed for dogs, cats, and horses to treat coccidia. Coccidia are single-celled organisms that attack an animal's intestinal walls, and can cause life-threatening diarrhea. Some species of coccidia can also be spread to humans. Ponazuril works by actually killing the organisms, while traditional treatments just stop them from reproducing.

This drug is used to treat coccidia, a very nasty organism that attacks the intestinal walls and causes severe diarrhea and therefor, is life threatening. It is commonly used in shelters where coccidia is fairly common. Consequently, when used, it prevents further spreading to other animals.
