Archival research is basically going to the absolute first source of information. All information has been archived since the infamous "Doomsday" book of Great Britain which gave information on the population to the King. That information was archived in a book. Today, archives are a variety of medium, such as newspapers, letters, email.

Archival research is when you go through old documents, papers, photos that have been archived either by an individual, group, organization, or sometimes in a museum. You look up specific information.
