A subway tile is a rectangular ceramic tile usually installed on walls. It is laid in a non-uniform pattern used in subways (underground trains)

This is a common term for 2" x 6" wall tiles placed in a brick pattern. Nowadays the tiles are 3" x 6" but the pattern is the same. White were originally used in bungalows in the 20's but the introduction of colors made them popular in the 30's.
