"n" is a variable, meaning that it can stand in for any number. Usually "to the nth degree" is said when a textbook is outlining a TYPE of problem where you take things to any given degree. Whether the problem was taking a number to the 5th degree, the 6th, the 8th, it would all be solved the same.
