Question by  Gus12 (10)

What does the broil setting in your oven really do?

Answer by  DtheM1 (1150)

The broil setting in the oven does two things. First, it only uses the top heating unit. Broiling, by definition, is only heating from the top. Second, it gets very hot. This will be hotter than the oven normally goes up to.

It turns on the top element in the oven only. It is also a continuous heat so whatever is in the oven needs to be watched carefully or could easily burn.
