Subrogation means stepping into someone else's shoes in regards to their legal claim. Often an insurance company will have a subrogation clause in their contract which allows them to sue the person who caused damage to your property and/or injury to you to recoup any money they paid you on the claim.

It is when an insurance company, after having paid a claim to its policyholder, sues the person or insurance company that was legally responsible for the accident, to get back what it had to pay out. Literally it means "standing in the place of another" or "substituting one creditor for another".
