If you're on a crowded subway you'll have to grit your teeth. In seated situations: the movies or an airplane, try to move. If it's someone you must talk with, back up; if they still come too close back up again. Otherwise say, "I'm sorry but I need some space? "

If anyone is making you feel uncomfortable, try to politely request that they give you more room. It is likely they don't even realize they are invading your space. If their behavior does not change, it is appropriate to become more stern.

You should politely step backwards or lower your eyes uncomfortably to get the message across that you feel uncomfortable. If the person still doesn't back off, you should say "excuse me" in a polite tone and try to turn away from the person slightly. Remember to be subtle, moving abruptly away from someone is considered rude.
