Americans generally prefer to keep a "bubble" of personal space of at least a foot around them. They will space themselves out as much as possible when in an elevator or sitting in a waiting area, leaving one empty chair between themselves and strangers. Chinese have a much smaller personal space, feeling comfortable bunching together in public and private spaces.

In America, personal space is important in terms of privacy. For example, in America, it is considered rude to get too close to someone you don't know well. In China, personal space isn't considered very important because people are always used to being in crowded and populated places.

Since the Chinese like the Japanese come from a very crowded country with huge populations they have grown to accept to minimize the personal space between individuals. Thats why they seem a little pushy as they feel comfortable talking closer to a person then a Westerner. Their hotels and apartments reflect the small concept.
