Many things can cause eye secretions in dogs. Some breeds naturally have more eye secretions than other breeds. It can also be because of irrations caused either by allergies or by a foreign object in the eye. Excessive smoke or dust can cause a dogs eyes to secrete more than average.

Eye secretions in dogs is actually a normal bodily function. However their can also be multiple factors that can cause the secretions to increase. Some of the more common causes of increased secretion may include but are not limited to glaucoma, blocked tear ducts, eyelashes growing inward towards the eye, and common allergies.

Some breeds of dog are prone to eye secretions and other than slight irritation, doesn't pose a large threat to the dog's health. Dogs can develope allergies, which can cause itchy watery eyes. The thing to watch out for is if the secretion is caused by an eye infection. If you're not sure consult a vet.

I do not know of all types of secretions of the eye, but I do know that my dog has horrible allergies. Ever day, several times a day, I have to wipe the corner of her eyes because she gets "eye boogers" caused by over production of secretions. It is similar to what happens in people, at least me.
