Heart murmur are caused by turbulent flow of blood across heart valves or abnormal openings within the heart. These can be congential (born with) or acquired. Acquired heart vavle problems can be due to infective endocarditis, ischemic heart disease, heart failure or sometimes due to diseases of lung or liver. Commonest congential malformation is septal defects.

A heart murmur occurs when blood flow through the heart is uneven. Some causes are genetic defects, past infections that affect the heart, past rheumatic fever, or defects in valves.

Normally it is caused by blood passing through a constricted opening or passing over a roughened mitral valve caused by rheumatic fever. Also caused by an interventicular septal defect.

A heart murmur is caused by blood flowing in a blood valve that may be overworked or damaged. However some heart murmurs are completely harmless, where blood is flowing through a healthy valve. Some people are born with heart murmurs and do not need treatment.

Heart murmurs is an abnormal or unusual sound heard during a heartbeat. These are caused mainly because of the heart valve problems due to infection, disease and aging. In children it is due to the congenital heart defects. These murmurs usually range from faint noise to louder one.

Besides from surgical procedures gone wrong, there are no "causes" of heart murmur. Rather, it is more commonly a condition that one is born with. You can get/it later/on in/life.
