You have to be accepted to train in the firefighter academy. Make sure you are physically fit. Any degree in fire safety will help. Also, volunteer for rural fire departments.

This will depend on your location and their rules. Typically you will need to be in as good shape as possible. You will need to submit an application to your local firehouse, once accepted you will give an interview and take a written exam as well as a physical test. If you pass you will attend additional training.

There is typically a test of both mental and physical ability for someone wishing to become a firefighter. Many municipalities will advertise when they wish to hire firefighters, and the advertisement will describe the requirements.

In some rural areas, you can be accepted as a volunteer firefighter simply by taking a short series of classes. But for fulltime work, you'll need to attend a fire training academy, where you'll be instructed in all the aspects of the job. This does not require a college degree.
