You have to be firm, because dachshunds are strong willed animals. Punishment may not be the best tactic, so offering small treats may be a good idea. Also, give minimal attention to bad behavior, because when they can't get good attention, bad will do. Attention should be given in abundance when they are behaving well.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train all dogs. Rewarding for the desired behavior will help the dog learn quickly, and will keep him/her eager to learn more.

Its important, if at all possible, to train the dachshund puppy early at about 8 - 12 weeks, with commands such as sit, stop, come, heel, stay, bed. Teaching him/her the basics will prepare them for more advances training such as fetch, roll over, and speak. When he or she follows the commands make sure to be generous with praise.

Patience, Patience, Patience. Always remember your animal wants to please you so use treats and praise as a modivator. Repeat commands often and you might have to help them follow the command (like push on their bottom to make them sit)

A rewards system with small healthy treats on a constant reinforcement schedule moving into a variable reinforcemement schedule is effective for training all dogs, as food is a significant motivator. Start out training basic behaviors: sit, stay, come. Then, move into more complex behaviors which require successive approximations.
