DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuation Protocal is used when you connect your computer to a network that it has not be pre-configured for. Your computer, when you turn it on, sends out message to all machines on the local network. The DNS or Domain Name Service translates host names *words) to IP addresses in the format 00.00.000.00.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. It's used for retrieving IP addresses and other information. DNS stands for Domain Name System. It links site names to IP numbers.
