Carabiners are metal devices used by climbers to attach ropes to each other. A typical carabiner is a roughly D-shaped aluminum ring with one segment hinged so that it swings inward. This segment is sprung so that it snaps back into place and forms a complete, gapless ring. This allows the climber to fasten it onto a rope quickly.
