What advice can you give me for blending families?

It's important that all of the children feel equal to one another and that one person's children aren't treated differently. This can make a child feel that you are choosing favorites and can have adverse consequences on the whole family dynamic you are trying to create by blending the two families.

First-- make it clear to everyone that you do not have expectations of instant blending. And, primary discipline will be the birth-parent's role. Takes pressure off the step and child.

In order to successfully blend and integrate families, you must jointly take part in activities that are fun for each side of the family. For instance, an activity that encourages teamwork and/or communication will help the blending process take place. The families will be forced to communicate with and identify with eachother.
