How long does it take for a tattoo to dry out?

I got a new tattoo yesterday, and was given salve to apply, but I'm not sure how long I have to use it. How long until my tattoo is completely dry and set?

It can take a tattoo 5 days to 6 weeks to completely heal depending on the size, colors, how deep the artist went, etc. You should use the salve or A&D ointment on the tattoo until the scabbing is totally healed then you can switch to lotion. Most tattoos do not take the full 6 weeks.

It's not so much a matter of the tattoo "drying out" as it is the healing of the skin in the area where the tattoo was placed. The salve protects the tattoo while the skin is healing, to avoid infection. The time period for healing (including some scabbing, which is normal) is approximately two weeks.

You have to keep the salve on for about a week. If not, the tattoo will scab over and you will have color loss. I know it feels gross to have the salve on, but moisture is your friend.

Typically a tattoo can take between 1 and 2 weeks to completely heal. To avoid infection, I would recommend using the salve for a month just to be completely safe.
