Certain fish need more space. Find out if your fish types like crowd (some actually prefer it) or needs room to move around. Some fish will thrive in small spaces (gold fish); some fish are believed to be happy in tiny bowls, but in fact will thrive in a larger tank (betas). If you have aggressive fish, provide many zones.

It depends on the size of the fish you wish to get, and how many fish. The bigger the fish the bigger the tank, the more fish means bigger tank.
