You are almost certainly required to get a dog license--most states and provinces require it. If you aren't sure how to get your license, just go to your city hall in person or online. They'll have the appropriate forms.

If where you got your dog didn't let you know about getting a license, then check with your city, county or state government to see what the requirement is. I don't know of anywhere in the United States where a dog license isn't required. Most licenses also require you to have your dog vaccinated against rabies too.

You want to contact your city's animal control department. If your city doesn't have a animal control then you would find out at city hall.

Most places do require you to get a rabies shot for your dogs and license them. In California the second you get a rabies shot the Vet has to report you to the County to make sure you get a dog license. Check your local courthouse for more information.
