Typically, males send sperm into female bodies by pressing their sexual openings against those of the female. Most birds have no external sex organs.

Most birds mate for life and will not find another mate if the other dies. Male birds mount the back of female birds. Typically, male and female birds copulate by briefly pressing together their cloacas, genital openings, which is also called a cloacal kiss. When pressed together the male sprays his sperm into the female. There is no penitration involved.
