Yes. I'm a former broadcaster/live event host. : having only solid surfaces in a room will cause echoes. One local restaurant recently installed disguised mattress-sized foam panels on their walls, much like radio & recording studio walls. Something has to grab some sound--and it makes a room A LOT quieter.

I do not think many people install acoustic ceilings in their homes anymore, except maybe in a basement where they need access to the pipes, etc. in the ceiling. Many public buildings still install acoustic ceilings to absorb the sound and make it more enjoyable for the people attending functions in these public buildings.

Acoustic ceilings have become a thing of the past, thankfully. They contain asbestos, which as we know causes cancer, among other things. If you buy a home that already has acoustic ceilings, do not be tempted to scrape them clean yourself. This procedure actually requires professionals due to the hazardous materials; which have to be disposed of by experts.

although acoustic ceilings are in decline, i think the more modern versions are asbestos-free. they use little foam balls suspended in a paint-like binding agent.  add a comment

I found that companies still sell acoustic ceilings. Armstrong is a major distributor. I also found a few website with instructions on how to install them yourself. They are still used in offices and apartments because they block out noise from other rooms.
