Unfortunately, when a beta fish turns white it is because it is very sick. The white color is caused by a fungus on the scales. This happens if the water is not clean enough or the beta's nutrition is poor making it susceptible to bacterial and fungal infections due to a weakened immune system.

It all depends on how the betta fish are kept. The only time they do turn white is when they are oxegen depleted. The way they are kept at many pet stores is not ethical. They demand more space and should be in larger tanks. Betta fish are often treated as toys.

Betta fish turn white when they are dead. That is the only time. Usually beta fish are very colorful and like to be alone.

That happens if they are very sick. It's the result of a fungal infection. Make sure your beta is in a tank with a heater and filter. Those small bowls can build up toxins and are too cold. Buy an anti-fungal medication and follow its directions.
